PRESS RELEASE | Immediate Release:
The Iconic Sway & Tech In Conjunction With Veteran Rapper Crooked I And Mike Smith of SMH Records Announce Hip-Hop Competition Show One Shot
September 29th, 2014 The stars aligned on Friday (September 26th), as Crooked I announced on radio show Sway In the Morning (Shade 45) that he and Sway would be working together for the first ever rap competition series One Shot. One Shot is a one of a kind competition show where MCs compete for the title of Hip-Hop’s next superstar. The winner will go on to receive a record deal with SMH Records and $100,000 cash. “This is strictly for Hip-Hop,” Crooked I said in his interview with Sway. “This right here is to provide a platform for Hip-Hop, for us. If you’re an up and coming artist, I had the same struggle. I had the same everything you got. I’m just like you. This is for us. Strictly Hip Hop.”
Crooked I, DJ King Tech (From Sway & Tech), and SMH Records CEO Mike Smith will travel to Charlotte, Atlanta, Miami, New York, Chicago, Houston, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, acting as the judges for the rappers’ auditions, along with a celebrity guest judge in each respective city. A VIP green room will feature other media guests and celebrities, who will weigh in on each rapper’s performance as well. The final four will be picked to compete in the main event for that city in a major showcase that will prove whether or not they deserve one shot. Before each main event, the four rappers chosen will work with SMH Records co-founder Jonathan Hay, Mike Smith, Crooked I, and Tech on the songs that they will perform. These four will act as mentors for each artist and prepare them for the final showcase in Las Vegas that will be hosted by Sway.
Rappers can go to http://www.myoneshot.tv to download one of the many instrumentals, produced by Hay and Smith, for their initial submission. Jonathan Hay and Mike Smith assembled together a golden team to make sure that everything was dynamic sonically. Grammy Award Winners Sylvia Massy (Prince, Rick Rubin), John Frye (Oukast, T.I.), Ken Lewis (Jay Z, Kanye West), John “JR” Robinson (Daft Punk, Queen Latifah) and Jerry Hey (Michael Jackson, Mary J Blige) helped to make the project happen. Cash Cash (Krewella, Katy Perry), Big V (Nappy Roots, Anthony Hamilton), Justin Sky Boller (Lecrae, Akon), Trakksounds (Kirko Bangz, ASAP Rocky) and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame member Jerome “Bigfoot” Brailey of Parliament Funkadelic were also included by Smith and Hay.
Viewers will also see segments that highlight each contestant’s story of struggle or inspiration. These will be conducted by famed Hip-Hop journalists Kim Osorio and Kathy Iandoli, and hope to give viewers insight to why each contestant is pursuing their dream.
This is not a battle, but a battleground where Hip-Hop and competition are the stars. All of their stories will be told. However, no matter how heartbreaking or uplifting it may be, only skill will determine who moves forward. “I believe in tomorrow’s rap stars,” says Crooked I. “I believe in giving them a bigger platform to be heard. I believe that I could help somebody get one shot because that’s all I ever wanted.”
